From March through late May, ocotillo blossoms are a scarlet display in the desert landscape. Hedgehog blooms usually at the end of March but can bloom as late as mid-April, and only lasts about two weeks. Prickly Pear usually begin to bloom in early April continuing through late May. The mighty Saguaro displays its creamy white blooms usually by the middle of May, with late May to early June as the peak time. The cholla flowers begin in mid-May and last until late August. The summer rains prompt the barrel cactus to bloom, beginning by mid-June and peaking in late August.

The town plan drew its inspiration from Savannah, GA and Washington, D.C. and included four public squares with streets laid out in checkerboard fashion. Lockerly Arboretum is located less than a mile south of town and is home to more than 6,000 species and cultivar plants. Situated on a 50 acre tract on the broad Piedmont Plateau, this unique horticultural laboratory has a primary mission testing nonnative plants to determine their adaptability to our Middle Georgia climate and soil. Tropical and desert greenhouses next to the headquarters building have some 600 species of mostly exotic plants. Lockerly is a garden to appreciate as well as to learn. Engraved plaques with plant information are carefully placed along the arboretum walkways and visitors are given a detailed self-guided trail map.
